Some attentive reader noted my comment about the scar on my face and asked me to expand - claiming they did not notice...
So here we go... Summer of '96. I had just moved back to my parent's house from Bermuda. I was in a sulky mood most of the time. It was a rainy weekend in July. I had spent the 4th with friends in NYC and it was great. But now that it was rainy I was sulky again. My parents were in the process of preparing the house I grew up in to be sold. They decided on that rainy day that it would be good to scrub the deck off our back door. They cleaned I sulked. OK - maybe I didn't sulk. I remember being restless.
Eventually the sun came out and my mood perked up. I threw on my sneakers and decided to hit the streets for a walk (yea - didn't run much then either). I went out the back door and promptly off the back step. I landed at the bottom of the steps. There were only 3 or so steps so it was no big deal. EXCEPT the side of my face hit the upper level of the deck and cracked open.
I remember sitting there with my hand on my cheek, back near my left ear, and I could feel the gap in the flesh. "DADDY, DADDY, DADDY, DADDY" was all I remember screaming... and there he came from WAY in the back of the yard running. Not the first time I had shed blood in the back yard and he came to my rescue. This was however the first time I ever had to get emergency medical care...
He calmed me down. Calmed my mom down. I think we called urgent care. And off we went.
There wasn't much wait at the urgent care. They saw me a lot faster than if we had gone to the ER. And I have never been much for hospitals (even less so now). The doctor said he could patch me up and get me over to a plastic surgeon or he could do the sutures himself. I opted to just have them done there. 12 stitches and 1 tetanus shot later we headed back home.
And I only felt like passing out or maybe it was vomitting about 30 minutes after we got home.
I spent the rest of the summer with zinc ozide on my face. I used lots of vitamin E. And my friend Fiona at Strands gave me a small bottle of Clarins Skin Repair to help with the scarring. To this day I still recommend the Clarins Skin Repair. And way off on my left cheek near my ear there is scar.
