and so it begins

Kp and I hit the pool today for the first time. 20 lengths at 25 yards per length for a total of 500 yards in 30 minutes.
PHEW!

Bojangles

Does walking back from the garage - yes my car is there again today - eating a cajun filet biscuit and bo'rounds negate the potential benefit of that walk? I am leaning towards yes.
That was the first fast food I have had in weeks. It was good. It was salty. It was fatty. And it was enough for now.
Back to healthy eating. And let's hope the drives to the garage will be less frequent.

ZUMBA - Monday...

I went to yet another Zumba class on Monday night. It was fun. I will try to go again this week. And this week's plus - I will be at a client all day and their office is THAT much closer to the Y. Seriously - they are about a quarter of a mile from the Y instead of 3/4 of a mile. I will take the motivation wherever I can get it.

So the class was fun. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the music. I enjoyed how not all people are good dancers. That would be sarcasm there. I so want to stop the class and say - OK let's take it from the top - swing the hip this way, the arm that way and point a toe for goodness sake. But that's not really the approach for the class.

The rest of the week I did NOTHING.
Tuesday to bed early to see a client the next day. Didn't really sleep. So to bed early Wednesday night to make up for the day. Thursday crazy meeting for work. Friday chips and salsa.

Saw my bike today

No, I didn't ride it. I just saw it. I got my exercise today the same way I did last Sunday.... gardening... Today I ventured to the store and purchased a new hoe to try to turn over the weeds and moss in my back yard. I also bought some patch repair seed etc for the lawn.
When I came home I yucked everything out of the shed to see what else I had stored up in there for the lawn. Gosh I have a mish mash of stuff in there. It's a shame I never got my Dad to put shelves in there. I don't think I wanted any at the onset of the home purchase.
So I turned the lawn, weeds, grass as best I could. I threw down some lime and fertilizer in the various shady, mossy, sunny areas. It is supposed to rain overnight into tomorrow. Let's hope so or I will be getting the sprinkler out tomorrow.
Anyways in the process.... I did see the bike sitting there in the midst of the garden and lawn stuff.
I would call today's workout an upper body workout and leave it at that.
They are supposed to come and power wash and paint stuff over the course of the week.
So I won't be putting any seed down just yet. However I do need to figure out how to protect my plants out front from the power wash chemicals.

I think I am going to be sore

I went to the little Y in B'tyne this morning/afternoon. I wanted to check out a new environment. I think it may be my new Saturday destination. Not too large. Not too crowded. Not too intimidating. Good mix of ages and sexes. Not too bad. And if you get on the right cardio equipment you can see town from where you are.
I did 9 miles on the stationary bike in 50 minutes. Not my best time. But given the fact I haven't really been on a bike since October - I'd say not too shabby. I would like to get faster than my average of 5 to 6 minute miles. That's where I was by last year's race.
I did a mile on the treadmill. Like a mini-brick. It took my about 18 minutes. Not my best time there either. I just wanted to work on the transition some.
And I am doing really well with the stretching. It is scary how my flexibility has vanished over the years. But it is coming back a little.
Overall 70 minutes of workout is pretty good for me.
Now I am off to soak in the tub while my roast cooks in the oven. I do need to run out and get some mixers for drinks. I will squeeze that in right before company arrives.

Today I got there...

I decided I would stop at the little Y on the way home. I also had to get a computer from a co-worker so I thought it would all fall together rather easily. Not so much - my workout didn't last as long as her car ride back to town. So I was home maybe 5 minutes when she called to meet up with me. No big deal really.
As for the workout 52 minutes on the treadmill a total 3.05 miles. Not a stellar pace but at least I was there. And I wore my new sneaks too! I'd say there was about 5 minutes of stretching.
I feel good for it. But need some hydration at this point.
Going to see a client tomorrow - would like to squeeze in a visit to the gym or blood bank tomorrow on my ride home.

Will not engage...

Yep, that's kind of the response from my engine yesterday as I was driving down the road on my way to work. You know in a split second you realise that is very quiet all of a sudden. And then the odometer has dropped. And nothing happens when you hit the accelerator. And in that split second you think - hmmm I guess I best pull over and quickly. And that's what I did and just in time before I lost all forward motion and rolled to a stop.
30 minutes later the tow truck arrived and back down the road we went.
$$$$ later and I have my car back. BUT we have another appointment at the car doctor on Friday. Some new spark plugs are needed and the inspection.
Needless to say I did not make it to the gym yesterday.

MMM - grunge

Time did not allow for me to muse on the re-release of 10 a few weeks back.
I went through my stacks of cds. Found my copy and listened to some good ol' Pearl Jam for the better part of a week. Good stuff. Matter of fact I had forgotten what good stuff it is.

In the same vain - and to make us all feel really old - yesterday marked 15 years since Kurt Cobain's suicide. Now I like some Nirvana. Oddly I never purchased any of their albums. I am not too sure why. Just never got around to it I suppose.

To continue down this train of thought - dead grunge stars - I did purchase an Alice in Chains cd back in the day. That's a Layne Staley reference for those of you scratching your heads. He died too. Drug overdose. Ahhh - such stellar role models.

Bike Tonight...

I brought my things to work today. Didn't really suspect I would get to the gym.
But I did. Bummer was the bikes I like at that gym were out of order.
I settled for a different type. It was OK. I did 6 miles in 32 minutes.
10 minutes of stretching - pulled something in my side.
An indicator that I need to stretch more.

It is getting windy and chilly out here. I am not all that happy about it. Had to go back out to the front garden this evening and recover the plants. It is supposed to be chilly in the overnight the next two nights.

Good timing

Well I ventured out to the store for the new sneaks... In a moment of weakness bought some new top-siders as well. They will go great with a new outfit I got for Spring.
Ventured to the mall for a watch battery and then over to the boat store.
Of all irony it is going out of business. I got teak oil for my table at reduced sales prices. I didn't do anything with it when I got home.
Just made some dinner and watched the tele.
Trying to get my head around packing the gym bag for tomorrow.
Another short work week...
Trying to also see who I can round up to fly some kites with me on Friday.... Learned it is also a tradition in Barbados. Go figure...

Let's try to make it a repeat for Sunday.

So far - it isn't noon yet - it looks like that could be the case.
I have managed to find the inside of my closet. For some that may not be a task but for me it is a struggle. It never takes that long to put the clothes away but I just drag it out to an unbearable task..
I hit the back yard this morning. The sun is out and it is not that warm yet but in the direct sun it was pleasant. My biggest task - what the heck to do with the grass that won't grow?! This has been my nemesis since I moved into the house. Sure they put so down on crappy soil when they finished the house. But that didn't work out too well - long story I am sure I complain about every Spring. Last year I yucked most of the grass and weeds (it was mostly weeds) and started to re-seed. That didn't take. So now my redneck yard (and it is a tiny one at that) need something. I am thinking - increase the size of the patio and forget the grass. Let's face it I have much better luck with plants than I do with grass. And it's not like Bacchus is lying about in the lush grass - there is NONE. So I think I will head back out there and get some measurements for a new patio. In the interim - the weeding of it all sure was a great workout for the arms.
From there I continued with some tinkering
Me and the mmighty putty went to work on the car. My passenger side view mirror has been broken for some time now. As I drive down the highway it loses its footings and drops. I kind of get a view of the sky going by. Really not handy when it comes to highway driving. So we shall see if the mighty putty really works.
While on the epoxy kick I decided to sure-up my teak table. I was thinking maybe I would replace it - it is old yadda yadda yadda... And then I had that conversation with myself - the teak is old and weathered?!?!!! hello??? Teak? The wood they make boats out of? Looking old and weathered? Duh - isn't that the point? Well the other point is the fixtures on the under side of the table AREN'T teak.... and they are splitting and pulling apart. So I flipped the table over and took some wood glue to it. Now I need to head to the marine supply store - I know 4 hours inland and we have a marine supply store? It is for the lakes I suppose. Anyways I need to get some teak cleaner and teak oil and then I will be happy with the table once again.
Lastly I installed some new solar lights along the edge of the driveway - see previous Target reference.
Oh and I started dinner - stewed chick peas, tomatoes and raisins (I threw in some dried mango in for the heck of it as well) with grilled chicken thighs marinated in cinamon, cayenne and curry. I have some yogurt and cucumber as well to round it all out.
And maybe I will find that gym again today.

Holiday = Productivity

Well at least I feel productive don't know that I really am.
Saturday got lots done - OK if you consider cleaning the tops of the kitchen cabinets and then lemon oiling the wood productive. It's always so nice when I am done. The cabnets look great. Definitely a highlight of the kitchen, maybe even the whole house. From there I cleaned the rest of the downstairs - well I haven't vacuumed yet - we have an extra pup in the house at the moment. Vacuuming would be an exercise in futility.
When the sun went around the front of the house we went to the front yard. Uncovered some of the plants that were thankfully NOT traumatized by the landscapers dumping pounds of mulch on them. I have a few variations of monkey grass coming back - no real surprise there. The Easter lilies are popping up strong. I am always amazed at how soon they pop through but then take forever to bloom. And thankfully there is new growth on the lantana. I think it will be some time for the calla lilies. I am hopeful they will show their pink blooms again this year. Struggling are the oleander. It got too cold too quickly this year. They definitely got hit by some frost. I am torn between planting them in the ground or repotting them to pots that I can bring inside next winter. Two very different scenarios.
From there I went to the gym - 3.75 miles on the treadmill in an hour. That is the longest I have stayed on the treadmill in quite some time. My legs feel it today. I had a really great stretching session afterwards as well.
And lastly, I deposited my tax return and promptly helped the economy by stopping off at Target.
Overall a good day.

A little re-cap

I mean little since I haven't really been up to that much...
I did do some walking around at the beach. Nothing with too much determination, however.
I did check out the indoor lap pool and treadmill at the resort but not much else.
Wait wait a minute.... that's almost a lie.
I did wlk about 30 minutes on the beach Monday and another 60 Tuesday. I am still cropping the pics and stuff. It will probably generate another blog site...
Tonight I went back to the gym. And hey - it is back to regular hours. I am glad I checked on-line. I was all dressed and ready to go. And was about to talk myself out of it - not enough time blah blah blah. And there it was on-line - back to normal hours.
So down the road I went.
I did 2.7 miles in 45.09 minutes. Not a record pace to say the least but a good workout none the less.
Now to keep it up. And yes- I do need to get in that pool sooner than later.

just the treadmill

2.13miles in 32.03 minutes
i was kind of rushing needing to get to the salon and all
it has been a busy day of nothing
i need to be downthe road but am burning a cd and can't leave just yet

i have some observations from the gym
i need to find the jimmy kimmel sesame street madoff video - it looked funny from what i could see of it
and i had no idea that SCUBA had such a sexy spin to it - I read a dive magazine while on the treadmill... every other page wa some chick unzipping her tight wetsuit... not that the breathing under water and fear of sharks is bad enough but now i have to contemplate land sharks as well the next time i don a shorty... makes me think twice about adding a dive trip to the agenda

well then again if i ever get under way on another tri i guess i won't feel as self-conscious in a wet suit... decisions decisions...

Sign of things...

I am getting my hair cut today. A little later in the morning than usual. So I figured I would get up, have breakfast and go to the gym. Well wonder of all wonders I slept later than I anticipated. OK 7:30 isn't really that late but when I have been averaging 6:30 on the weekends (eerrrrr) I figured I would have lots of time to do all the things I wanted before heading to the salon. Well now I am feeling a little pressed for time (I know why am I writing, then?). I can still make it for a little bit. Out of procrastination I decide to verify the hours for the little Y. AND much to my SHOCK - they have reduced their hours. The little Y will only be open until 1pm today. AND is not even open tomorrow. Not that that should alter my game plan or anything. Because I need to go RIGHT NOW! And as for tomorrow - I was thinking of throwing some air in my tires, yucking the bike rack onto the car and heading back to the park I visited last weekend. OK - so I best go. I don't have much time. Maybe 30 minutes.

gym

i got so sidetracked by this video a friend sent me i almost forgot to document
I ACTUALLY WENT TO THE GYM TONIGHT!!!
Not only did I go to the gym - I came home from work, had something to eat, changed clothes and headed over there...
In the 4th day of rain I so would have guessed I would have stayed in
But I knew I just needed to do it... Hey and the little gym wasn't very crowded at that 7pm hour...
Might try it again tomorrow
The rain and all don't have me motivated yet to put on a bathing suit and jump in the pool
anyways 2.17 miles in 35.11minutes followed with stretching
I think the stretching is my favorite part - it reminds me of gymnastic days - and what a sense of accomplishment to be able to touch my nose to my knee...
As me how THAT feels tomorrow

MMM - Irish Bands... of course

While out on the path I did not bring along any music. It was nice to walk and just listen to the rain and slapping of feet as others ran up and past me. But while out there I did get a chance to contemplate some music. And of course with St. Patrick's Day right around the corner how could I not go there....
I could tax my brain and go for the truly obscure. And I thought I could be really entertaining and post links to youtube of various videos. But instead (I've posted lots of pics over the past few hours) I am just going to ramble on a list of artists and songs that come to mind
U2 - The Sweetest Thing (ok a Patty Smythe cover but I like it anyways); Enya - Far and Away; Clannad - the theme to Harry's Game; The Waterboys - Hole of the Moon; The Pogues; Black 47 - did they do that Funky Kaylee song; Damien Rice - Cannonball; Snow Patrol - Spitting Games

OK - I know there are more. My brain is just blank at the moment. So this will have to do.

Walk / Run in the Rain

You could call it a case of cabin fever. It poured down rain 2 weekends ago. And then last weekend was so beautiful. The motivation to do anything physical has been minimal at best. Finally today I had had enough. It wasn't raining too too hard. And it wasn't THAT cold. Going to the gym just didn't appeal to me. And then I remembered how much water/rain/flooding I had seen from the road down at the park the other weekend. So I bundled up - long underwear (yes- I am a wimp), tshirt, sweathshirt, fleece pants, scarf, ear warmers, and raincoat - and off I went. I was surprised when I got to the park that there were a number of cars there. And once out there I realised what a die-hard runner is. There weren't that many people out there for a leisurely stroll. Well I kind of was. I brought my camera and headed on down the trail in the hopes of getting some pictures. The greens are always so much greener when it is raining. I took the path to the left until I could go no further (see other posts for highlights). It was a little over a 1/4 mile out. So 1/2 mile down. And then down the path to the right. I went 3/4 of a mile out. For 2 miles total. I wanted to go farther but I know that park well enough - it is so tucked away and you just want to keep walking. But then you do have to turn around and head back to the car. Plus I wasn't too sure how long the light rain would last. I took a number of pictures. It was really a nice afternoon out for what it was weather wise. And I even ran a bit in there. I feel better for it - that's for sure!
